Instructor: Doug
Group: Me, Kieran and Chris
Waitomo
Saturday, 9 am-5.30 pm, 6.5 hrs underground
We reviewed the cave 1 syllabus then went into Zwihollen. I rigged the first drop, Kieran rigged the drop to the stream way. Chris climbed up to the Freeway and belayed us up. We each set up a ladder system there and practiced an assisted hoist rescue. Doug feed us lots of info on how to do very simple assisted hoists. We went for a run to the Oasis then abseiled down the Rat run
I learnt about the weakness of clove hitches when using both tails, gained a good idea about analysing what part of your anchor needs backing up. The other theory on the transformation of straws to stalactites. 1 good reason to use a triple bunny ears knot on a ladder(reducing the angles). Wrap 3 pull 2s are amazing ways to attach a ladder to a bollard.
Sunday 8.30 am-5 pm
We went into Waipuna, main tomo. Chris rigged a hand line down to the stream. Doug drilled us on Waipuna micro navigation. We talked about cave science quite a bit too.
Kieran and I went into Lucky first and started rigging a traverse line above the stream way, Chris rigged a 150' y hang ladder. We found Kieran's emergency pack and discussed a bit of rigging stuff. We went up stream through the water falls and discussed options of how to manage groups up the crux's and haul someone up the fat lady ladder.
