All Good Kayak Trips Involve a Tow Truck

Kayak
Aoraki Polytech
Instructor: Ian Logie
Group: Me, Emma, Brad, Hana
Location: Queenstown

5/3
Flatwater, Lake Wakatipu
Worked on forwards paddling strokes, breaking them right down and critiquing each other. Then sweep strokes and some other funky strokes Logie made us do, including stopping in one stroke forwards and back, cross bow strokes.

6/3
Hawea Slalom Site
Grade 2
Flow: 14 cumecs
Drilled eddy turns and draw strokes, lots of rescues, garage sale clean up, barrel rolls, assisted ferry gliding, and learnt this crazy as river crossing technique involving creating a circle and rotating across the river.

Safari guide helps us out of a tight spot...
7/3
Upper Shotover
Grade 2
Flow: 30 cumecs
Super cool run, one of my favourites. We did heaps and heaps of surfing waves and holes. Logie broke the van with his crazy driving. Epic road.

8/3
Dogleg and Roaring Meg
Grade 3
Flow: 145 cumecs
Logie gave us a mega work out making us follow him and catch every eddy on the top half of the run! Picking our own lines and getting used to boily big water. Meg was scary as, but also good fun, especially once man eater didn't quite get me.

9/3
Roaring Meg
Grade 3
Flow: 130 cumecs
Very tired but feeling more relaxed and better on the big water. Epic week!
