Day 1 - In the classroom, Doug finished up weather, I did more on Navigation, then we went out to the Taurewa Bush loop to practise walking on a bearing.
Day 2 - Finished up Nav in the classroom, then out to Lake Rotopounamu for some real live Nav in some actual bush. I took 6 students and they each took us to an off track point.
Day 3 - Out to Tama Lakes for overnight. I took two of the slowest students and two of the most on to it students so they could help each other out. Did some on track work and then off track, which proved a great little challenge for them, as the track is marked incorrectly on the map and so they were in a totally different place to what they thought when they left the track. Nav challenge at night: walking on a bearing in the dark, counting out pacings to markers.
Day 4 - Had the two slower students from yesterday, then two others, one of whom had sprained his ankle the night before and had a very painful time walking out, but actually learnt a lot more nav that day because he had to slow down! Just did more nav points, practising using all nav tools.
Cool as week working with older students than what I'm used to. Looking forwards to being with them on their survival week.
