9 boys
14-15yrs
A set 10 day program incorporating Bronze DOE.
Day 1
Bush bash to the DUB, flying fox, swamp and pool tyrolean.
Days 2-3 overnight
Started at Waihohonu side of the mountain, plan was to go up the ridge behind the hut and camp between Ngarahoe and Tama lakes, but the weather was worse than forcast, snowing and windy and some of the boys were very poorly equipt (which was great learning for them). So I let them get spanked by the weather then we turned around at the top of the ridge and went back down to camp behind the hut where it was much more sheltered in the bush.
Next day we walked out via the tracks to Whakapapa Village, stopped for swimming at Taranaki falls.
Day 4
Caving. Okupata cave (tried to get into the back of the cave, although the water was very low, the back of the cave was sumped), up the dry valley to Pukehinau cave. Another good character building day for them.
Day 5
Climbing and abseiling at Meads wall. A bit more of a chilled day for them. Combined with Emma's group. Played in the snow, then she ran climbing and I ran the abseil.
Day 6
Off
Day 7-9
Tramping in the Pureoras for their DOE. We started on the Taumaranui side and came over to Waihaha. Average weather, but easy compared to our first overnight. The boys did really well, seemed to have taken on what they had learnt the week before and ran the trip themselves very nicely.
Day 10
Kings challenge rogaine, then a high ropes session. Final dinner and presentations.
