Staff Training

Hillary Outdoors Staff

Day One

Boyd did a session on setting up and debriefing the week.

I ran a session on caving. We made sure that everyone was calling all the parts of the cave the same names and went over the water gauge. We went through escape routes and straightened out facts on glowworms, weta, rocks etc.

In the afternoon Chris and Graeme ran a session on Lake Otomanakau in canoes. Went though teaching progressions, strokes, games and rescues.

Day Two

River rescue day on the first rapid of access 10 with Stu, Don and Graeme. Focused on swimming rapids, throw bagging, pinning/foot entrapment scenarios. Then abseiling on all our river gear.

Day Three

Had a talk about running DoE in the morning and then a quick talk about Log Books and Licences. Spent the afternoon on vertical rope rescue, getting familiar with our rescue locker and going through scenarios.

Day Four

Morning was taken by Graham the CEO doing his talk about the business.

In the afternoon Chris ran a session on the climbing wall. The focus was on getting kids climbing rather than focusing our sessions so much around belaying. Some very cool games and techniques.
