Lakeman and Devilskin

Bush
Aoraki Polytech
Instructors: Asher March, Jen Riley
Group: Me, Anna K, Frankie, Andy, Vaughan, Allan
Location: Lewis Pass
Days: 4

8/6

Hope River to St Jacobs Hut
Assessment for Bush Craft. I planned the chosen route which had to be a four day tramp with one hut night and at least four hours on the first and last days. Did my day as coordinator on the first day. First night stayed in the hut and worked on flora.

9/6
Lake Man Bivouac to Doubtless Hut
Camped outside the hut on the second night.

10/6
Devilskin Pass to Nina Hut
Vaughan’s achilles tendons were playing up and he wanted to walk out. After much discussion we decided that as the injury had come on slowly, rather than one trauma event he would do no more damage to it and was able and should go on. Jen made the point that as an instructor he would have no choice. I swapped packs with him so he was carrying less weight and gave him a walking pole and we loaded him up on pain killers. Had a slow trip over Devilskin Pass and camped at the hut.

11/6
Followed the Nina River out
Last day worked on fire lighting and walked out..
